PYLON & LARGE FORMAT WANGARATTA

A shopfront sign works at walking pace, close enough to read comfortably from the footpath. A pylon sign has to work at 100 kilometres an hour, set back from the road, past a run of competing frontages and roadside clutter, with a driver who has perhaps two seconds to read it before the turn-off is already behind them.

That is a genuinely different design problem: bigger letterforms, higher contrast, a structure raised clear of parked trucks, hedges and passing traffic, and copy trimmed down to the handful of words a driver can actually take in without slowing down. Businesses set back from the Hume Freeway, tucked behind a car park, or sharing a corner with three other tenants lose passing trade for one simple reason - nothing on site is tall enough or clear enough to tell the road they are there, and a sign that reads perfectly from the footpath can disappear completely once you are doing highway speed past the same frontage. We build free-standing pylon signs, monoliths and post-and-panel signage from digitally printed ACM panel mounted on aluminium or galvanised posts, single or double-sided depending on how the site is approached from the road. A recent job was a double-sided ACM pylon for a civil contractor's yard, legible from both directions of the road it fronts, so traffic reads it whichever way it is travelling. Another was an illuminated pylon for a motel, lit through the evening so guests arriving after dark can still find the driveway rather than missing it and doubling back further down the highway. Panels sit in a frame rather than being painted directly onto the structure, so a tenancy change, a rebrand or an updated phone number means a new printed face rather than a whole new sign, which keeps the ongoing cost of change well below rebuilding the structure itself.

From there the decisions are about how hard the sign works after dark and how easily it clears council. Internally lit cabinets throw the most even light and read cleanly from a distance at night, which matters for anything trading past sunset; external floods cost less up front and suit a simpler brief where night visibility is a bonus rather than the main job. Posts and footings are specified to the wind loading your particular site and permit call for, because an exposed highway frontage or an open paddock takes harder gusts than a sheltered street corner. Because a structure this size almost always needs a planning permit, we prepare the drawings and specifications your application needs rather than leaving you to track down a separate consultant partway through the job, so the approval step is planned in from the first conversation, not discovered as a delay later on.

WHY IT WORKS

WHY PYLON & LARGE FORMAT FROM SIGNPRO

01

READS AT SPEED

Letterforms, contrast and mounting height are sized for a driver reading the sign in passing traffic at speed, not a pedestrian standing still in front of it. Stroke weight, colour contrast and the height the sign sits above eye level are all set against actual approach speed and sightlines, because that is the brief that genuinely matters for anything facing a road rather than a footpath.

02

BUILT FOR WIND

Posts and footings are specified to the wind loading your site and planning permit require, rather than a generic catalogue size. A sign standing in an open paddock or on an exposed highway frontage faces harder gusts than one on a sheltered street, and the structure underneath it is built to match those conditions, not the minimum a smaller or more sheltered sign would need to get away with.

03

LIT AFTER DARK

Internally lit cabinets or external floods keep a pylon working long after the shops around it have closed, which matters for motels, service stations and anything trading into the evening. A dark sign at eight at night is a sign that has stopped earning for the rest of the day, and illumination is specified at the design stage rather than added as an afterthought once the structure is up.

04

COUNCIL READY

Structures at pylon scale almost always need council sign-off before they can go in the ground. We prepare the drawings and specifications your planning application actually needs, and flag likely conditions - height limits, setbacks, illumination rules - before you commit to a design, so the approval step is handled as part of the job rather than discovered as a surprise once the application has already been lodged.

LOCAL COVERAGE

SERVING NORTH EAST VICTORIA

Pylon signs earn their keep on the roads that carry the traffic - the Hume Freeway approach into Wangaratta and Wodonga, the Great Alpine Road through Myrtleford and Beechworth, and the wineries and cellar doors dotted through the King Valley near Milawa. Open, exposed sites take the worst of the regional wind, which is exactly why the footings and posts are specified for the site, not a generic catalogue size.
